Can we Travel in Thailand on an International Motorbike without a valid License?

A friend and I are planning to buy a motorcycle in Kuala Lumpur and travel around Thailand with it. The problem is that we don’t actually own a motorbike license. So it’s to know if someone already tried the experiment and if it’s possible?

Not sure if you can ride a Malaysian plated vehicle in Thailand. You may need special permits. Next problem is getting that bike into Thailand. And if you somehow bribe them enough to get it in, you will be pulled over every five minutes, for driving a bike with foreign plates.

Don’t drive vehicles you don’t have a license for. It can become VERY expensive if you are involved in an accident. Doesn’t matter who caused the accident.

Thx for the info, that’s what I was scared of. Do you know which country would be the best in South East Asia to buy one to travel around Laos, Cambodia, etc so by any chance?

It’s most common to do Vietnam, north to south or the other way around of course. As soon as you try to take the bike into another country, you will be spending a lot of time or money, or both :).

I know that some manage to get their bike from Vietnam into Laos and Cambodia but forget about driving it into Thailand. It’s simply not gonna happen.

And Thailand is the second most dangerous country to drive in, I have the scars to back that statement. 🙂

Buy a motorbike in Vietnam and go to Laos and then Cambodia. Don’t cross the border from Laos to Cambodia or vice-versa if you don’t want to get scammed for your bike. It’s almost impossible to cross to Malaysia or Thailand with the bike. But why would you buy a motorcycle in Kuala Lumpur if you wanna travel around Thailand?

Because we like to be complicated… No, but more seriously because we will travel to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. So it was to know if it was better to buy one in Malaysia or in another country.

I think it’s gonna be very complicated every time you cross a border mate. It will be a bit of hustle at every border and very difficult in Thailand and Malaysia. I don’t want to be that guy but this is not a good idea. I would recommend buying one in Cambodia and travel to Laos. Do Thailand and Malaysia with bus/train.

So let me ask, Your idea would be to drive illegally through 5 countries without licence or knowing the laws and punishments awaiting you? I would say, DON’T BE SILLY.

Now, there are ways to travel South East Asia on a bike (not scooter) if you do get the right papers which takes a lot of effort, time and money. I recon, by the time you got all the papers together, you will have passed your driving test too, if you start right away 😉

Best to buy one in Vietnam. Lots of people do the north to south or vice versa so easier to buy there. At least get your international license before leaving the states. Also, beware of that your health insurance will probably not cover any costs in case you have an accident if you drive a motorbike without a license. I am having the same problem at the moment in Vietnam ????. Good luck!

I would have done so, but I’m away from home since a while, so that’s not really an option. And yeah, I know about the insurance part, it’s a bummer… But I’m ready to take the risk!
