How Easy/Legal is it to Wild Camp at Albania and Macedonia?

We are planning a road trip with our own car to Albania. How easy/legal it is to wild camp there? And how about Macedonia? Are the locals tolerant and positive towards it? I remember in Corsica it seemed they had a pretty negative attitude towards it for example.

I’m from Finland and used to being able to pitch a tent up anywhere, and traveling elsewhere is confusing since it’s hard for me to see the problem with it.

I assume if we do that, it’s best to stay at some distance to villages etc? I had a situation once when I was camping alone next to a village in Slovakia where somebody tried to come into my tent when I was sleeping, which was pretty stressful.

We were camping along the coast of Albania – we put our tent usually on the beach near to a tavern or something, and asked the owners if it is fine. Locals always gave us good advice on where to put the tent.

They didn’t charge for that? Since the actual camping places are also quite cheap.

Usually no, but we went to eat at their restaurant, it was polite. We didn’t saw any real camping places along the coast, if I remember right. Once we paid (but really just some euros) for putting the tent in the garden of the market owners, but we also used their shower and toilet.

I am from Macedonia. You should be careful with camping in Macedonia especially if it’s at some distance to the living places since we have this refugee’s route going through Macedonia. (many people still try to pass illegally ) And from July till September (I am not sure about the date) moving and camping (especially making fire) in the mountains is forbidden.

Moving, like even hiking? Hmm, there must be some routes that can be walked?

Yeah, hiking. Maybe there are some, I don’t know. I also wanted to make some hiking and camping with friends near my hometown in the forest and we checked with the authorities and we were told that from July 15th on it is strictly forbidden to hike and be in the mountain. (because of the summer forest fires that are very common in our country).

I’m also a fellow Macedonian, and I am a hiker too! ???? I’ve been hiking Macedonian mountains for over three years now, and I’ve never ever had a problem before, not even making a campfire (if it’s surrounded and secured with stones for safety, of course).

Macedonia has so many places to visit, whether you go camping or sleeping under the open skies. If you want to camp outside, I’m sure my fellow citizens would let you. If you happen to camp near a town or a small suburban area – ask the locals If you can place your tent nearby. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.

There are numerous monasteries and churches all over the country that would be happy to take you in over the night and let you help them prepare a meal for you and the monks.

Macedonians are usually very friendly, they can even open their doors for a cup of black coffee and a good talk! But when it comes to hitchhiking, it’s a bit difficult in Macedonia, since they’re somewhat scared of picking up strangers on the road. But I’m sure you won’t have a problem ????

We have our own car with us, so moving is not a problem 🙂 What a wonderful idea about the monasteries, I’d never think about that even though I heard some friends stayed over at them in Bulgaria I think!

Southern Macedonia has some very beautiful, secluded monasteries that are almost in the mountains. I recommend visiting Bogomila, as it has one of the friendliest and most beautiful old monasteries. Tourists tend to go there since the landscape is awesome and the people are open to welcoming tourists and hikers all the time (especially during the summer)!

To which part of Albania do you want to travel? On the coast, you may have problems with locals and police (if they find you 🙂 ). As for Macedonia, on Dojran lake and Ohrid lake you can do wild camping, but don’t make fire and try putting up a tent when it gets dark. This is my boyfriend’s advice, and he traveled a lot by hitchhiking around the whole Balkans (we are from Serbia).

We don’t have a precise plan yet, it just seems like a wonderful country that I know very little yet of. Mostly we are interested in nature, the mountains, and the sea… Whatever wonderful there is to see 🙂

Albania has been one of the most welcoming country. I’ve been, camped out a few times, just a few because people were giving constantly couchs : ) It was in 2010 I do not know if it changed. Have fun there!
