Does Vietnam Visa Requires Onward Ticket for ASEAN Passport Holders?

My girlfriend (ASEAN passport) was told by a friend that if you fly into Vietnam on a 30 or 15-day exempt stamp (not with visa on arrival or Visa) she will need to show proof of onward travel. We will be leaving by motorbike. Any recommendations on airlines with easy to use full refund/cancellation policies?

I’m from the Philippines… Which is part of ASEAN… When I flew to Hanoi, they didn’t ask anything but immigration from my country asked me about my return ticket.

Not true. ASEAN passport holders don’t need an onward ticket when flying into Vietnam. I wasn’t asked for an onward ticket. It shouldn’t be a problem.

However, you can use http://www.flyonward.com to purchase an onward ticket for future reference.

Our mutual friend was asked and pulled into an interrogation room and questioned. He was let go with a warning not to do it again.

Visa exemption rules are the same for all visa exempt countries. Proof of onward travel is an official requirement. Just because some people are lucky doesn’t mean the law does not exist.

ASEAN passport holder here. I’ve been forced to buy a ticket. Was flying KL-Hanoi. Staff was absolutely rotten. Tore my boarding pass up. Wasn’t even familiar with how many free days I could stay. Go FlyOnward or something.

Sorry to hear that. I think you just need to book something and then go back to the counter to show them for issuing your boarding pass?

Yep. So I spent 20 mins replanning my route. It was quite a headache. But it worked out. Got myself a $60 ticket Saigon-Bangkok and just shifted couple things around.

They will not ask for an onward ticket but better be safe and ready as it is mandatory to have one. AirAsia is a cheap airline for their refund and cancellation policies, you can also book a bus to Cambodia or Laos just to show off.

Have you ever read this policy? I never had a problem, but two weeks ago I had to change the date of a flight, and that was expensive plus not very convenient to do. If you want to cancel a flight, I heard it’s even worse, and they give you a certain percentage of the ticket price as credit which you can only use in a certain time frame. Hope I’ll never have to deal with that ????.

I heard if you cancel the flight, the airlines will deduct 30-50% of the ticket price and the balance you will get within or after one month. Just lucky I have never been asked for onwards tickets, even other times that I’m traveling alone. I’m holding an ASEAN passport too. My boyfriend was holding a Swedish passport what he did; he will book the cheapest bus and show it to the immigration and throw it.

FYI: in case if it’s Thai passport. You need to have a return ticket. Otherwise, you can’t fly. I do not know about any others nationality even when I am in the tourism industry. I sometimes have to deal with airlines so that why I know. Counter check-in staff will not let Thai passport fly if do not have return flight ticket. But I’ve heard Asian passport also have similar rules.

For those saying they weren’t asked for it… Did you have a return ticket anyway? If you did, I wonder if they could see it in their computers.

I didn’t have a return ticket because I travelled to Cambodia after. I flew into Vietnam 3 times without return ticket/onward ticket and I was never asked. Perhaps I was “lucky”. But if you want to be on the safe side, get that onward ticket for $10. I could have suggested another online site to book a bus ticket to Cambodia, but it’s $17. More expensive than getting that $10 onward ticket!

Yeah, I did grab a copy of my return ticket just in case they ask.

Has anyone had experience with flyonward.com that can confirm it works when checked?

A friend of mine applied for a Thai visa with it and it worked.
